SOIL BEHAVIOR AND HYDROLOGIC PROPERTIES OF HAJIAWA AREA, IN SULAYMANIA, KURDISTAN, NORTHEASTERN IRAQ
Abstract
Behavior of soil and Hydrologic properties have a great effect on design of hydraulic structures, Hajiawa town located in Sulaymania governorate in Kurdistan
region northeastern of Iraq, the town has undergone rapid development and increase in population, for this importance, the soil behavior and hydrologic properties in Hajiawa town should be determined, where there is no previous study for hydrologic and soil behavior. For soil classification mechanical analysis which consists of two methods (sieve analysis and sedimentation analysis) are used, Atterberg limits are used for studying the soil plasticity. The hydrological properties are defined based on surface infiltration rate. GIS model was used for processing a satellite images to define the study area. The results indicated that the soil of medium to rapid rate of infiltration, and it consists of mixture of grovel and sand with few silt and clay, also soil of slightly plastic to low plasticity. Therefore a good matching was indicated between hydrological properties and soil behavior of Hajiawa town.
